About Us

We are a group of experienced publishing professionals who have chosen to live and work in the Berkshires. We work primarily with local authors in creating quality books of lasting value. Some of our authors have been published before, some have experience in media and others just have a good story to tell or a skill to teach. In most cases our titles have a local point of view and appeal to people who love the Berkshires but our main criteria is that our readers wherever they live enjoy our books.

Founder Laurence Gadd has spent over forty years in the publishing industry, as an editor, editor-in-chief and publisher. He has held executive positions at Crown, Free Press and Macmillan, among others. Twenty-five years ago he started an after-hours publishing company called The North River Press that grew to be an influential publisher of business books for academia as well as for the general public. North River Press moved to Great Barrington, Massachusetts in 1993.  In 2010 Larry retired as president and publisher but retains a consulting role with the company. His own works have been published by Warner, Macmillan, Bobbs-Merrill and Simon and Schuster.

Senior editor Cia Elkin has been a freelance editor, copy editor and researcher for the pas forty years. She has held copy editing positions at Time, Inc and the Berkshire Eagle. Her editing experience encompasses a wide range of subjects and genres from young-adult fiction and mysteries to gardening, travel and self-help books. She has been a consulting editor to The North River Press for the past seventeen years.
